Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency
(Alpha-1)


Alpha-1 is inherited, meaning it is passed down from parents. Alpha-1 is not contagious so you can not “catch it” from someone. This condition causes either low levels of, or no alpha-1 antitrypsin in the blood.




Common symptoms of Alpha-1:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss


Common related diseases:

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Emphysema
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Asthma (that does not respond to treatment)


Testing:

Anyone with relatives who have Alpha-1 should consult a physician for testing.
